Living and studying in Providence, a city steeped in ghost stories and the eerie legacy of H.P. Lovecraft, I was inspired to create a project that reflects the haunting, mysterious essence of this place. Drawing from Providence’s connection to the unknown and the surreal, I chose to explore the intersection of myth, texture, and entrapment through the medium of textiles.
Through this project, I aim to capture the spirit of Providence—a city where the lines between reality and the supernatural are beautifully blurred. By weaving together folklore, imagination, and physical material, this work reflects the unseen forces that might surround us every day.
This project uses woven fabrics and intricate patterns to evoke the textures of an imagined world. Each piece is inspired by ghostly tales and the unsettling narratives that linger in the city, combining traditional weaving techniques with abstract and organic forms. The installation culminates in the depiction of an unknown, otherworldly creature trapped in a web-like structure, embodying the tension between captivity and mystery.
The patterns and colors within the textiles suggest layers of history, myth, and fear, with subtle references to the esoteric symbols often found in Lovecraft’s stories. The use of shadows and varying textures creates a dynamic interplay between the seen and the unseen, inviting viewers to discover their own interpretations of the work.
